The lost type specimen of Heterolepis capensis A. Smith appears to have been a female of the taxon now known as Mehelya capensis savorgnani (Mocquard, 1887). In order to stabilise the nomenclature, the only specimen of M. capensis available to Boulenger in 1893 in here nominated the neotype.
