In spite of the economic climate in Zimbabwe 2016 was a very productive and busy year for the Natural History Museum and the sites under our management with many improvements happening at all of them. For those that have yet to visit Khami World Heritage Site and see where the “Friends” fund raising efforts have been well spent, Khami is open (as well as the Museum and all sites) throughout the holiday season, including Christmas day so take the family for a picnic and enjoy your days off in wonderful surroundings.

For those that are not on Facebook and following the museum activities, we have managed to move the Filibusi Memorial to the museum grounds with the kind assistance of Stray Dogs and we hope to put the pieces back together in the New Year.

With donations and extra money raised from our events we have boarded up the display area in the Hall of Man above the Makishi Mask display which resulted in this display being removed and backdrops repainted. We are still in the process of cleaning and repairing the artefacts before they are returned to the display and we apologise for any inconvenience this has caused to our visitors.

The repairs done to the leaking roof, funded by Beit Trust, seem to have held with all the rain that we have been blessed with (with the exception of one leak in the Directors Office). Water damage in the upper galleries as well as parts of the outside of the building have also been repaired with this grant.

Beit Trust has just awarded more funding to the Natural History Museum to hire a fund raising consultant so we are confident that more international support will be given in the years ahead to our wonderful and international important Museum and sites. For those that are unaware of the importance of our museum please purchase our Guide to the Museum Booklet.

Friends continue to support the museum with fund raising events and the “Night in the Museum” was a huge success with 140 children attending dressed as various creepy crawlies having a truly memorable evening. Funds raised from this will go towards a permanent Arachnid display in the invertebrate gallery.

Speaking of invertebrates the museum staff have been involved in a number of invertebrate research projects in the Matobo Hills, Debshan Ranch, Shangani and the Eastern Highlands. This has resulted in range extensions recorded for many species including Parabuthus scorpions, not previously recorded from the Highveld. It is now the scorpion season so please do take care not to be stung. A booklet on the Scorpions of Zimbabwe and treatment of stings is available at the museum shop. Our heritage range of books, the latest one on the Matobo Hills, are also on sale in our shop. These make excellent presents for your overseas families that miss their homeland.

The museum cafeteria is under new and improved management so please do stop and have a cup of coffee and cake or something more substantial on your visits to the museum.

We are now preparing for our fungi display and will slowly be taking take down our dinosaur display from the downstairs gallery. This display was opened by visiting Virginian Tech, USA, palaeontologist, Christopher Griffin and we have received the first of his publications on high growth variation in dinosaurs based on material of Megapnosaurus (Syntarsis) rhodesiensis which he has on loan. Please note the name has changed yet again from Coelophysis to Megapnosaurus!

The Finn O’Donoghue Egg collection is finally safe within the walls of the Museum. The Easter Egg hunt held earlier this year raised the necessary funds to buy the cabinets housing this collection. We would like to thank Directory Publishers (Pvt) Ltd. for providing transport from Harare to Bulawayo for this collection.

Condolences go to Wendy and Alan Gardiner and families on the tragic death of Mike whose association with the museum goes back more than 60 years. Mike made a valuable contribution to the study of Lepidoptera of Africa resulting in two species being named after him Anthen garineri and Kedestes michaeli.

The following family movies will be shown during the rest of the holidays at 10am. $2/person
Wednesday 28th December - Ice Age Collision Course
Thursday 29th December - The Secret Lives of Pets
Friday 30th December - Space Dogs Adventure to the Moon
Wednesday 4th January – Storks
Friday 6th January – Trolls

We looking forward to seeing you all again at the Museum and Sites in 2017 where we have another eventful year planned for all ages and interests.

Best wishes
The Museum Staff, Management and Friends Committee.

The panels above the displays has finally been finished after 10 plus years. However it meant that the Makishi masks and the basketry and pottery needed to be removed. Those displays are now also getting a much needed clean. We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this work.
